Looking for an Astro Web Designer in the UK?

Astro is the technology behind a lot of the fastest small-business websites in the UK. Here's what it actually is, when it's the right choice, and how to hire someone who builds with it.

If you’ve been told you need an “Astro web designer”, here’s the short answer: Astro is a way of building websites that sends almost no code to your visitor’s phone, so the page loads fast. It’s an excellent fit for the kind of site most UK small businesses need — a handful of pages that explain what you do and get people to contact you. It’s a poor fit for complex web apps with logins and dashboards.

That’s the whole thing. The rest of this is the detail, in plain English, so you can hire well.

What Astro actually is

Most modern websites are built by shipping a large bundle of JavaScript to your visitor’s browser, which then assembles the page. It works, but it’s slow — especially on an average phone on a patchy 4G signal, which is how a lot of your customers will find you.

Astro takes the opposite approach. It builds the pages once, on the developer’s machine, and serves plain HTML. By default it strips out client-side JavaScript entirely, and only adds it back for the bits that genuinely need to be interactive — a booking widget, say, or an image gallery. The Astro team call these interactive bits “islands” in an otherwise static page.

For a five-page business site, that usually means there’s nothing to load at all beyond the page itself. Which is why these sites feel instant.

It isn’t a niche hobby project, either. In January 2026, Cloudflare acquired the company behind Astro and brought the core team in-house, while confirming the framework stays open source. Cloudflare’s own announcement lists Unilever, Visa and NBC News among the brands using it.

Why speed is a commercial issue, not a technical one

Two reasons it matters to you specifically.

People leave slow sites. Someone searching for a plumber or an accountant on their phone has three other tabs open. If your page hesitates, they’ve gone to one of them. You never see it happen and you never find out.

Google measures it. Page speed is part of how Google ranks pages, through its Core Web Vitals measurements. It isn’t the biggest factor — relevance and content matter more — but when you and a competitor are otherwise evenly matched, it’s a thumb on the scale, and it’s one of the few ranking factors you can simply buy by building properly in the first place.

A fast site doesn’t guarantee enquiries. But a slow one quietly costs you the ones you’d otherwise have got.

When Astro is the right call — and when it isn’t

Good fit:

  • Brochure and service sites — trades, consultants, clinics, agencies, restaurants
  • Sites where content changes occasionally rather than constantly
  • Blogs, guides and location pages you want ranking in Google
  • Anything where you want low hosting costs and very little to go wrong

Not the right fit:

  • Full e-commerce with hundreds of products and live stock levels (Shopify usually wins here)
  • Membership sites, customer portals, anything with logins and personalised dashboards
  • Sites your team needs to restructure themselves every week without a developer

Be suspicious of anyone who says Astro is right for everything. Choosing the tool to fit the job is most of what you’re paying a professional for. If a studio recommends the same stack regardless of what you asked for, that’s a signal.

The question you should actually ask

Honestly? Most business owners shouldn’t be shopping for a technology at all. You’re not buying Astro, you’re buying enquiries. The framework is the builder’s choice of tools, not your specification.

So instead of asking “do you use Astro?”, ask:

  1. How fast will my finished site be, and will you show me the score? Anyone competent can run your finished site through Google’s PageSpeed Insights and show you the result. Ask to see it for sites they’ve already built.
  2. What do I do when I need to change the text? Static sites are fast partly because they’re rebuilt when content changes. Make sure there’s a sane answer here — a simple editor, or a studio that just does it for you as part of the deal.
  3. Do I own it, and can I take it elsewhere? Astro sites are ordinary files. They can be hosted almost anywhere. That’s a genuine advantage over page-builder platforms where leaving means rebuilding from scratch.
  4. What’s the hosting going to cost me? A static site is cheap to host — often a few pounds a month, sometimes nothing. If you’re being quoted a large monthly hosting fee for a five-page site, ask what it’s for.

Finding someone in the UK

The pool of UK studios building specifically in Astro is small, which cuts both ways. There’s less choice, but the people doing it have usually chosen it deliberately rather than defaulting to whatever they learned first.

When you’re looking, ask for live links, not screenshots. Open them on your phone. Notice whether they appear instantly or whether you watch them assemble. That single test tells you more than any amount of technical discussion, and you don’t need to know anything about code to run it.

Also check they’re building the whole thing — design, copy structure, mobile layouts, the basic SEO setup and the hosting. A fast site that nobody can find is only half a job done.

Where we sit

We build in Astro, and this site is built in it too — you can check it on your phone right now if you’d like to test the claim. It’s a core part of what we do: our Astro web design and development service covers the whole job, from design and build to hosting and SEO. We use it because it suits our clients: small UK businesses that need a handful of pages that load fast, rank, and bring in work, without a monthly platform subscription or a site that needs babysitting.

If you’d like an honest read on your current site — speed, structure, and whether it’s actually working for you — we do a free website review. No obligation, and we’ll tell you if the answer is “leave it alone”, because sometimes it is. You can also see what we charge and what’s included before you talk to anyone.
